Fearless: The lack of fear. Is it possible to be fearless? In short, no. However, it is possible to overcome some fears. Some fears can be irrational and as human beings we all fear something that probably will never happen to us. Do you fear creepy-crawlers with six legs and eight eyes? Do you fear heights or rather “the fear of falling?” Are you afraid of the things that go bump in the night?
No one should ever tell you that your fear is “stupid” and that you should “just get over it.” Though many of our fears are irrational, our sense of fear is there for a reason. If we did not feel fear imagine what the world would be like: People jumping from building to building, more people robbing banks and increasing the crime rate. We would be jumping on and off moving planes just to get to school. (Congrats to those of you who got that Divergent allusion).
When people put down your fears make them consider this, the most irrational fear of all: Death. The only thing insured in life is death. No matter who you are, how you live, and what you have done we will all die someday. We keep ourselves from doing dangerous things because we fear death but really we should be more afraid of not living. By being trapped in our fears we are stuck simply existing. Do you want to exist or do you want to live?
With that I challenge all of you to step out of your box, and take baby steps away from it. Soon enough the box will simply be a memory, and fear will turn to knowledge of right and wrong. And then, as a society, we can awaken to a world of new possibilities.
